Military tactical drills kicked off on the Caspian Flotilla in the Astrakhan Region on May 24. The naval infantry is to demonstrate its prowess and skills in a three-day exercise.

According to Pavel Golovkin, chief of staff at the 73rd Brigade (Caspian Flotilla), during this exercise the crews of warships are expected to engage and resist a token enemy. The second and final day of talks on Iran's nuclear program has drawn to a close in Istanbul, ending a round of unproductive negotiations regarding the issue of Iran’s plans for uranium enrichment.

­Tehran staunchly avoided a direct discussion of its atomic agenda as officials from the six world powers – the US, Britain, China, Russia, France and Germany – pressed for guarantees that the Islamic state would not develop nuclear weapons.

Wrapping up two days of meetings, the EU's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, said Iran will remain under UN sanctions for failure to cooperate.

The legal status of the energy-rich Caspian Sea was in focus at a summit in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku. Leaders of the “Caspian Five” discussed how to ensure the security of the area.

Regardless of the incident with the Soyuz TMA-20 spacecraft, which was damaged while being transported by train to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Russia will fulfill all 12 projected space flights by the end of the year.

The Soyuz TMS-20 spacecraft was severely damaged due to an improper transportation regime. One of the brackets used to secure the vessel inside the transportation capsule came loose and the Soyuz crashed to the floor, deforming the re-entry vehicle that will now most likely be replaced with another one taken from Soyuz TMA-21. The post-Soviet «troika» (group of three) is the basis for CECO

The Russian project of the Caspian Economic Cooperation Organization (CECO) meets for the present a cautious attitude of other countries in the region. At least, it is extremely difficult at the moment to join in this project all five states of Caspian region. There is only one solution - to create the organization with those states that are ready to it. The others will join in later.
