08.02.2012 00:34:57 Ice floes in Azerbaijani sector of Caspian Sea The Caspian Sea off Azerbaijan's northern coast is beginning to freeze over "Ice has formed in the Caspian Sea off the coast of Nabran. Ice can also be seen off Siyazan. There are 10-metre long ice floes off Siyazan, 5-6 m floes off Nabran, 20-30 m floes off Tagiyev and 30-40 m off Sumgayit," the director of the Ecology Ministry's Climate Change and Ozone Centre, Gulmali Suleymanov, told APA.
He said that the ice layer was thin and could be broken easily. The ice off the coast of Siyazan and Nabran is between five and eight centimetres thick.
Suleymanov said that shipping could still reach Russia, although ice has formed in the northern Caspian Sea.
The first ice was seen in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea on 3 February.
The last time ice formed in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian was in 1953 and before that in 1920. In 1920 ice was recorded in Gizilagaj Bay, south of Neftechala, where it caused caused the death of more than 10,000 migratory birds. In 1953 ice floes were recorded in the north of the Caspian Sea as far south as the Absheron Peninsula. The ice floes were bombed in order to prevent danger to the Oil Rocks offshore production complex.
